Trump Aid Denies Drinking

Do you think he was drinking?

It has to be a pretty embarrassing day when a news anchor calls you out for drinking on the air. That's what happened to Sam Nunberg, a former Trump aid who apparently smelled like alcohol during a CNN appearance on Monday. Erin Burnett says that she "has smelled alcohol on his breath," but he denied it.

Nunberg, who is not only refusing a subpoena issued by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, has been seen engaging in erratic behavior lately that has many people wondering whether or not he is drunk. Nunberg insists that he is sober but on anti-depressant medication.

What do you think of Nunberg's appearances? Has he seemed inebriated to you? Sound off in the chat.

Alcohol and Coffee = Long Life

Some studies support this claim

Whether you love alcohol, coffee or both, this news is good for you. Several studies have indicated that alcohol and coffee drinking contribute to living a longer life. This correlation only exists with moderate drinking of the beverages and not overdoing it, but given that some studies indicate the exact opposite effect, you may want to evaluate the studies yourself before you use them as lifestyle advice.

So what is moderate? Many argue that it's a drink a day, while some say it's up to three cups of coffee daily. Given that there is so much variation in body types and metabolism, it's probably difficult to give a definitive answer, but excessively drinking either is definitely not helpful for your health.

Booze Better Than Working Out?

For those older than 90 it is!

If you're over 90 years old, exercise may not be the best thing to help you extend your life. In fact, booze may help you out more! A long-term study has indicated that drinking two glasses of beer or wine each day increases longevity for people age 90 and older by 18 percent. The study suggests that it's even better to drink than exercise, which only cuts the risk of dying by 11 percent by that age.

Given that these studies can be biased or based on correlation and not causation, I would not advise all elderly people to just start binge drinking all of the time, but it is interesting. Perhaps those who drink are doing so socially and the social activities are what's helping them live longer? Whatever the reason, it's definitely food--or drink--for thought.

What do you think of this study? Have you read about anything else affecting longevity lately? Share what you find in the chat.

Bitter and Twisted

Try this Valentine cocktail

Making Valentine's cocktails for everyone tonight--or for someone special? Either way, try this cocktail on your guests. It's a bitters drink, so even if you're drinking alone tonight it might be apropos for Valentine's Day. You'll serve this one on the rocks so be sure to have some ice cubes handy.

You'll need Campari, Fernet-Branca, dry gin, red vermouth and orange bitters for this cocktail. Have some orange peel as a garnish if you want to dress it up a bit. It's a very grown-up cocktail without the frills so it's not the best choice for the club but perfect for your night in.

The Allure of Cinnamon

Tis the season!

If you're like me, you've been much too cold for comfort lately! I'm so grateful for my home, but with the heat broken we've been relying on space heaters. We've also been relying on warming spices to help keep us cozy and cinnamon is my current go-to flavor! I am so in love with it all over again, adding it to every drink and cup of coffee.

Cinnamon is the perfect Fireball cocktail ingredient, and you can use it in everything from the delectable Cinnamon Toast Crunch shot to the mouth-watering Apple Pie on the Rocks. A Fireball Pumpkin Spice coffee might be best in the fall but I'm up for it any day of the week!

Hot Chocolate Based Drinks

Start out with a packet...

Last week, we talked about how there are lots of options for milk-based cocktails without dairy. Today let's talk about drinks you can make starting out with just some hot water and a hot cocoa packet! Some hot cocoas are so much better than others, and obviously the milk of your choice will make it richer and creamier, so it's totally up to you how you want to mix it.

The easiest thing to do, of course, is to simply spike your cocoa however you want it, which you can do with whatever you have on hand. While this is the most convenient course, it may not be the tastiest option. For that, you can try any of these excellent ideas. Some half & half or heavy cream will do wonders for your cocoa, and some cinnamon, salt or marshmallows will really set off your drink. Add some spiced rum for a warming kick!

Lactose intolerant people need mudslides, too

These are fantastic for parties when you're not sure if a guest has an intolerance (or if you're sure one does!), too. Many different varieties of nut milks are available, but did you know that you can also make your own?

But Sara! I hear you say. What about nut allergies? You can also make your own coconut milk! It's pretty simple and has a wonderful flavor. You can find recipes to make your own cashew, coconut, almond and brazil nut milk all at the link. You can even try turmeric root milk if you feel so inclined!

Lemonade Purple Haze

Ever heard of Purple Haze Lemonade? It's not only tasty but it's also beautiful! Purple Haze Lemonade goes well with--what else?--listening to the Purple Haze album! All you need is vodka, raspberry liqueur, and cranberry juice. If you like other purple juices feel free to experiment!

Make a version with lemonade and lemon-lime soda for a fizzy twist that is incredibly flavorful, or try making them into shooters for your next party. It's also easy enough to make this one non-alcoholic for your guests who prefer to abstain from drinking.
