Cocktails For St. Patrick's Day

Do you have your lineup?

This St. Patrick's Day, how about going beyond the green beer and popcorn for something a little more special? I know I've got my keto Irish Mule planned for the weekend, but what do you have lined up for St. Patrick's Day?

Town and Country magazine has a great compilation of St. Patrick's Day cocktails to get you started. The Gaelic Grasshopper with Irish whiskey looks like something I would love, and I know the Blind Irish with its cinnamon apple simple syrup would be the perfect warming drink if it's cold this weekend. I don't know where you are, but where I am it's supposed to be chilly, but not freezing, so this would still be a welcome beverage!

The Kale St. Patrick's Day cocktail doesn't look like my personal cup of tea, but maybe it will work for you. Another cocktail, the Saint Casa, looks gorgeous with its edible glitter garnish, but honestly you could just top anything you like with some of that, right?

Fun Spring Drinks

Share your recipes

Summer drinks are often the most refreshing, but spring drinks seem to be more creative and mouth-watering, especially given the plethora of herbs and fresh fruits used to infuse them. A grapefruit mint mojito, for example, speaks of warmer weather approaching, while the cherry blossom cocktail celebrates the ultimate harbinger of springtime.

Peaches, blueberries, roses and fresh sprigs of rosemary make drinks not only more palatable but beautiful, delighting our senses and inspiring us to open up the windows, get our spring cleaning done and relax with a beautiful white peach margarita at the end of the day. The best spring drinks, at least to me, are cool, crisp and bubbling, making use of sparkling water or seltzer along with the fruits of the season.

Leprechaun Shots

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day

If you're Irish American, I'd first like to suggest you look up a few more meaningful holidays to celebrate instead of, or at least in addition to, St. Patrick's Day. We pretty much just use every holiday as an excuse to get drunk here in the States, but if that's your thing, why not enjoy some fun themed drinks while you're at it? You can't deny that these adorable leprechaun shots are tempting to try.

It's basically just whiskey, apple schnapps and corn syrup with a rim of gold sprinkles, but sometimes the simpler a cocktail is, the better it tastes. I think these gold sprinkles are so cute they should be on pretty much every holiday cocktail. They'd be just as festive at Christmastime or even Mother's Day as they are at St. Patrick's Day, right?

What drinks will you be serving for the holiday?

Cocktail Safety

Use this resource to make sure your drinks measure up right

Mixing your own drinks is a fun hobby, but sometimes you may be including outdated ingredients that actually aren't quite safe for human ingestion. It's a disturbing thought that many old cocktail books list ingredients that are banned today due to their lack of safety, but this new website can help mixologists learn how to mix drinks safely.

You can use the CocktailSafe website in order to look up any ingredients that you want to use and make sure that each cocktail you prepare is safe to enjoy. Each ingredient is listed alphabetically, making it easy to find what you need when you're mixing your drinks.

Have you ever mixed a drink that featured something that wasn't safe? What was it?

Rose Quartz Latte

A beautiful drink for Valentine's Day

Before reading this post at Elana's Pantry, I had no idea that such a thing as a rose quartz latte existed, but here is the recipe! It looks like a beautiful drink made from coconut milk, beet powder, rose water, vanilla stevia, vanilla powder and cacao butter. It's slighly more complicated than other keto drinks I've made (many just call for heating, blending and serving, which is one of the joys of keto cooking!) but it looks so pretty and yummy that I really want to make it.

If you want your red or pink drink to be more of the cocktail variety, how about one of these delicious libations? The fermented raspberry soda looks so good, as does the French Monaco. Do you have any Valentine drink cocktail recipes to share? What will you be drinking this Thursday?

Sexy Valentine's Drinks

Share your favorites!

A tasty drink can really make a date something special, whether it's a romantic night out, some self-care in or a Galentine's or Brotines Day event! You can celebrate with a number of sexy valentine cocktails, and the sky is the limit when it comes to recipes online. Try something like a Sex in the Driveway, made with peach vodka, blueberry lemonade water enhancer, cherry and diet Sprite. Raspberry and blackberry mojitos are also really sexy drinks, as are mulled wines, sangrias and cosmos.

Why are fruity drinks so much sexier than other drinks? Sometimes bitter drinks have a nice sophistication, but a daiquiri does scream fun night. What kind of drink do you think is the sexiest kind?

Bring Drinking Can Chang DNA

And more drinking news this week

A new study suggests that binge drinking can actually alter your DNA, making addiction harder to kick. The findings show that binge drinking makes you not only crave alcohol more but also causes your body to not regulate stress and biological functions as well. It's a really scary side effect for people who binge drink a lot in addition to the many terrible effects we already know binge drinking causes, so why do it in the first place? Stick to moderation to be healthy and happy, and if you need help, get it. It would be nice, of course, if our country provided free healthcare so you could access counseling and rehabilitation if necessary.

In other news, two harmful ingredients that are contaminating our drinking water that need to be condemned are not being regulated by the EPA as they need to be. Normally the EPA sets limitations as to what a safe amount of a chemical in our water might be--often at dubious levels that sound like they could still be harmful--but the Trump administration is refusing to set limitations on PFOAs and PFOS, which can cause everything from hypertension to kidney and testicular cancer.

Have you read any news about drinking laws and science findings this week?

Brewery Tours

Which one is your favorite?

Is there a distillery tour in your area that's not to be missed? What about a brewery tour that is so good you have all of your out-of-town visitors try it out? Brewery tours are a great way to score free drinks (at some locations, as long as you are of age!) while learning about the company's history and business practices. You can decide if it's really the kind of beer (or other spirits) you want to support while expanding your experiences and sampling new drinks. Honestly it's one of the best dates you could plan for drinker friends or dates.

The Anheuser-Busch Brewery in St. Louis does a wonderful tour where you can really get a behind-the-scenes look, multiple drinks and snacks in the hospitality room, see the Clydesdales and much more. It's a lot of fun, and if you want to enjoy even more than what you get on the free tour there are tours for a fee with even more experiences, like beer school and tours with more drinking options, like a sourvenir glass.

What brewery would you say is one that's not to be missed? Tell us about your favorite!

Boozy Candles

Yes, they are a thing

As a candle hoarder, I love unconventional scents that you won't find at the typical store but at, say, geek conventions or in online shops like Etsy. I am a sucker for homemade items to begin with, but when I see a candle named "Hello, Sweetie" as an homage to River Song of Doctor Who fame, you can bet that I'm interested. That happens to be what I'm burning right now.

So when I discovered that you can get a lot of your favorite drinks as candles, it sort of blew me away. Mojito candles? You'd better believe it. Just look up any drink you want, from a Tequila sunrise to your fave sangria, and there's probably a candle for it. It's amazing how creative artists are and what scents they come up with.

Did you know you can also get your favorite drinks as lotions and perfumes? The Internet might have unfortunately killed a lot of flea markets and other local treasures but it sure has given us access to a wider variety online.

What boozy candles, lip balms, lotions and potions have you purchased? Which are your favorites?

Yummy Ginger ACV Tea

It's so easy and so healthy

Last week we talked about Tea Drops, so I thought I'd share my new ginger tea recipe. It's so easy it can't really even be called a recipe, but it's not only delicious but also helpful with digestion, managing blood sugar and a bunch of other benefits for just a few cents per cup!

First, brew your water like you normally would, whether it's on the stove, in a kettle, what have you. Once your tea is boiling, either stir in some powdered ginger or use a ginger tea bag (that's what I do) and let it steep for at least 10 minutes. Once it's finished, add in 2 Tbsp. of apple cider vinegar, which is where most of the health benefits come from. Sprinkle in 1/4 tsp. of cream of tartar (it's flavorless but adds potassium!) and your favorite sweetener or honey. That's it! The result is a delightfully tangy, slightly fizzy tea that will warm you up and get your tummy working well in no time.
