Booze Subscription Boxes

Which one do you like best?

There is a subscription box for everything, whether you're into stickers, sewing, makeup or, yes, booze. There are over a dozen alcohol subscription boxes available in the United States that will send you a special curated box of booze or booze-related goodies to help you keep your cabinet well-stocked, but which ones are the best of these?

Some are more affordable than others. Flaviar, for example, is only $20, but it's only a box of samples. Still, it's a fun way to try new booze each month to decide whether or not you want to buy full bottles. Taster's Club is pricier at $59 a month, but they offer a restock option to help you keep your bar full. Different boxes have different themes, and many offer custom fields where you can select which types of alcohol you prefer to receive.

Do you subscribe to any alcohol boxes? If so, which ones? Tell us about how they work in the chat.

Drinking Rates Expected To Rise?

Make up your mind, studies

Aren't drinking studies so much fun? One week, we learn that wine is good for you in moderation; the next, any amount of drinking is terrible and should be avoided. Something similar just happened with this study that revealed that drinking rates will rise around the globe in the next 10 years based on current trends. Is it really any surprise given that facism is also on the rise, with so much anti-immigration, anti-woman and anti-everyone-else sentiment on such a roll even in nations we didn't expect it from? The only issue is if we're too drunk to protest, we're in even more trouble than we thought!

The issue is that there are a bunch of other studies that claim millennials are killing the booze industry, drinking much less and forcing alcohol manufacturers to rethink their whole business, even going as far as making non-alcoholic drinks to reclaim their lost business. If this is true, how is the reverse also true? It's likely that the latter only considers drinkers in the United States, but it seems like we're constantly receiving mixed messages from researchers. That, of course, is how science works, which is why it's so hard to prove things sometimes.

Which theory do you think holds more weight? Do you think drinking is on the rise or decline?

1 in 5 Kids Doesn't Drink Water

They get tons of sugar, though

As a young mother, I tried to make sure everything my child ate meant something, nutrition-wise. I was 22, and my baby was an underweight preemie, so you can imagine the flaxseed, full fat milk and other heavy-calorie foods I fed my toddler. (I wish I'd thought of avocados back then!) I didn't ever let them have junk food. In fact, their dad gave them junk food during a day out at the age of three, when shopping for a car. It was taking a long time, he hadn't packed a snack while I was home working, so he bought them Cheetos from a machine. Boy were they impressed!

That sugar is addictive. I used to scoff at the idea of sugar being so terrible, but then I realized that it's added to EVERYTHING, and it's there to make us want to keep coming back for more. Did you know that 1 in 5 kids in our country drink a bunch of sugar but don't drink just plain water? It's a terribly sobering thought, and as much as society loves to shame and blame fat people, we have to consider modern lifestyles, how sugar's added to everything, how it's peddled like a drug in everything from school vending machines to every holiday party to a reward or treat to look forward to and really make some changes overall. The average size is 16 now, so it's not just something to blame on random people.

Do you think you get enough water? How about the kids in your life?

Fermentation in the Kitchen

What do you brew?

Fermentation is an incredible process to me. I have friends who make everything from their own kombucha to their own kefir in the kitchen, and while I've tried my own hand at some of these methods I still have to tip my hat to the dedication and effort required to create these incredible good-for-you brews that not only save money but keep you and your family in good health.

Fermented drinks are full of probiotics and help you improve your digestion, among other things. You can even ferment things like coconut milk if you don't want or can't deal with dairy, although you might be surprised. Many people who don't digest dairy well find that once fermented, dairy products are much easier on the stomach.

Do you do any fermenting at home? If so, share your methods and ideas in the chat!

Edible Six-Pack Rings

This is genius!

Innovation, creativity, problem-solving... these are the qualities that make a great entrepreneur today and I love what this local beer company is doing with all three! Saltwater Brewing is making six-pack rings that are not only biodegradable but edible, preventing loss of life when wildlife try to eat or get stuck in the rings. The company's model should not just be embraced but be made into a mandatory law for every seller of six packs!

I don't understand why we don't have laws like that in effect already. Okay, I do: the bottom line, profits over people (and animals), right? But if we set laws outlawing the destruction we've caused and making it a law to do better, we'll certainly change things, won't we? I read that ADIDAS is selling shoes made out of ocean plastic--this is amazing! And it's also something that other companies should be doing until we get rid of the garbage patches in the ocean, too.

A Drink A Day Raises Your Risk Of Stroke

Then again, other studies say...

Okay everyone, this new study says that just a drink a day increases your risk for having a stroke after following 500,000 people for 10 years and analyzing their health and drinking habits. That said, how many studies do we have that suggest a glass of wine a day is good for you for other reasons? Before you ask, yes, a small glass of wine was included under the umbrella term "drink," so some of those stroke-havers may have been drinking daily wine.

Perhaps we need more specific studies. According to these findings, the risk increases to 38% for every half bottle of wine per day. I'd have to agree that half a bottle of wine a day probably isn't a good idea for you, but after reading studies that say a glass a day is good, what are we supposed to believe?

Like just about everything on this planet, it's probably likely that it's both good and bad for us. I have yet to find one thing that's not; even water can be toxic if you drink too much of it!

Do you think it's better to abstain from drinking, drink once a day, or spread out your drinking a bit more?

Smoothie Making

Share your favorite recipes

When I make smoothies, I almost never use a recipe. I toss ingredients in, taste, toss in more. I usually get stuck on something I like and just stick with that for a while--often it's a green like spinach with something creamy, like yogurt or coconut milk, and something sweet, like OJ or some fruit and honey. Bam, there's a smoothie, right?

There are benefits to be had when it comes to following recipes, though. For starters, it's easier and less time consuming, but you can also design recipes for specific nutritional needs. Take this Dairy Free Berry Smoothie recipe; it has cashew butter and almond milk as well as blueberries and bananas, making it a pretty balanced meal. It also calls for vanilla extract, which is a great way to add flavor without adding a bunch of sugar. There are so many extracts to choose from if you want to play with flavors, too.

Kodak-Processing Beer

Because it's a thing

Ever heard of an "analog beer for the digital age"? Neither have we until Dogfish Head announced their SuperEIGHT Beer, which can apparently process Kodak film. There's a whole process to use when developing the film in the actual beer, which is laid out in a convenient infographic here.

I mean, it's kind of cool, but I'd rather drink my beer than use it to develop photos. This red beer has a tart taste with high levels of vitamin C and low pH, with some of its ingredients including prickly pear, blackberry, kiwi, toasted quinoa, boysenberry, raspberry, mango, elderberry and red Hawaiian sea salt. It's one of the most interesting flavor combinations I've seen in a while and I know I'll have to try it out--even if I don't use it to develop film.

Do you know of any other beers known for "extra" purposes aside from having a good time? Share them in the chat!

London Fog

I'm a little obsessed

It's such a simple drink, so why have I never even tried a London Fog before this month? It's the perfect month to enjoy one, isn't it? Storms, coldness slowy seeping away as winter fades into sping... I've had a London Fog latte at home every day this past week and I can't see myself stopping.

Mine is a little different, since I don't do regular milk and I don't steam it; if you order one with steamed milk, I hear it's even better! But I just brew 1-2 bags of Tazo Earl Grey (depending on which size mug I'm using), add a bit of heavy cream, sweetener and vanilla, and that's it. It couldn't be simpler yet it's so warming and calming. It might also be due to the lavender; this recipe calls for adding the soothing herb but the Tazo type I use already contains it. The alcoholic drink is quite different, but you can try that, too.

What is your soothing drink of the moment? Share it in the chat.
