The important part of the Coca-Cola equation is in the "cola", as in "Kola Nut". The kola nut is related to the cocoa bean and several varieties of tea. It has more flavor than a coca leaf and it has the added benefit of natural caffeine content. The failure of New Coke was a marketing issue. Early taste tests actually showed people preferring New Coke over the old recipe and Pepsi. The biggest change was actually the sugar content. New Coke was considerably sweeter than the old stuff. It died because of a public backlash and some pretty extensive reactionary ad campaigns.
